About the treatment
What is Kalupada seka?
A traditional heat therapy used for fractures, spondylitis, joint pain, back pain and sciatica. It began at Kalupada Ghat in Khordha, Odisha, and is named after the place.
Is it an Ayurvedic treatment?
Yes. It uses herbal oils, medicinal herbs and natural ingredients.
How does it ease pain?
Herbal oil is applied to the painful area, cloth spread with herbal oil and paste is laid over it, and gentle heat is given with a warmed iron rod. The warmth and herbs relax the area and ease pain, and most people feel relief within a few days.
Does it burn the skin or leave marks?
No. Our experienced therapists give it with great care, and only as warm as you can bear.
Are there side effects?
It is a gentle, natural treatment and problems are rare. Tell us if you have diabetes, poor feeling in the area, a skin condition or an allergy to any oil, so we can take extra care.
Fractures
How are fractures treated?
We examine your X-ray first. A paste of medicinal herbs is bound around the injury on a cotton bandage for two to four weeks, with bamboo splints where needed, and changed about every four days. After that, seka eases the stiffness that is left.
Can every fracture be treated with seka?
Many can. Some need hospital care first, such as an open fracture where the bone breaks the skin, or a break in the skull, spine or hip. We’ll tell you honestly after seeing your X-ray.
How many days does it take?
It depends on the bone and the injury. A minor injury often feels better within 10 to 15 days; a fracture usually takes several weeks.
